Updated for the Half Price Books 2019 Summer Reading Program The Half Price Books summer reading program for kids gives out free Half Price Books gift cards to kids who read for at least 300 minutes during the months of June and July. This program is available  to kids preschool through middle school. Rewards Available From the Half Price Books Summer Reading Program If a child reads at least 300 minutes during June and July they can submit their reading log to get $5 worth of HPB Bookworm Bucks for each month. These can be applied to a pre-tax amount of a single transaction. How to Get Free Gift Cards From the Half Price Books Summer Reading Program Visit the Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program website, and download the Feed Your Brain Reading Log. Theyll need two logs, one for June and one for July. Each day your child reads during June and July have them write the number of minutes theyve read on that day on the calendar. The goal is to read at least 15 minutes each day of the week. At the end of each week, kids can add up their weeks total minutes and have a grown-up initial it. Total minutes for the month can be added up at the bottom of the calendar. After the child has read at least 300 minutes, fill out their name, age, and total minutes, as well as your name, email, and location information. Cut out the completed part of the form and bring it to your local Half Price Books to get your reward. The reading logs are due no later than August 29, 2019. Encouraging Your Child Through the Half Price Books Summer Reading Program When your kids are finished with a week, a month, or the whole program, you can fill out a Half Price Books Feed Your Brain Reading Award to keep them encouraged about their progress.   If you want to make some suggestions on what your child reads this summer, Half Price Books has put together a list of staff picks by grade level, best alphabet books, 40 books every child should read, and 21 books to start babys library. Dracula Essay Compare And Contrast Anti-Christianity is a major reoccurring theme throughout Bram Stokers Dracula. The novel portrays Anti-Christian values and beliefs, through one of its characters. Dracula one of the main characters in the novel is used to take on the characteristics of the Anti-Christ. Stoker uses many beliefs from the Christian religion to display numerous amounts of Anti-Christian values, superstitious beliefs of the protection towards evil, and to compare and contrast the powers of God with those of Dracula. It is a theme that is used throughout the entire book. There are many ways that Bram Stokers character Dracula can be considered the Anti-Christ, mostly because of the showing of Anti-Christian values and abuses of the Christian religion. In chapter one as Jonathan Harker is traveling to Castle Dracula he is met by several people who give him a crucifix when he tells them where he is heading. One superstition is that a rosary will protect you from all evil, and in this novel the evil is Dracula. This rosary protects him when Jonathan cuts himself shaving the next day and Dracula lunges for his throat, but stops when he sees the crucifix around Jonathans neck. Later in the book it discusses how you can defend yourself from Dracula and other vampires by the possession of a crucifix or practically any consecrated item from the Christian religion can be used to save you from the attack or presence of a vampire. Another example of one of the superstitious acts is later in the book when Van Helsing uses a Host to prevent Dracula from entering his coffin or when he makes a Holy Circle with the Hosts to keep vampires out and to keep Mina safe. All of these are examples in which some forms of Christian beliefs are used to prevent the attack of Dracula. Dracula has several powers that the Christians believe no one but God could control. For instance, Dracula can control the weather, wild, or unclean animals, he can change form, and has the power of necromancy. Christians believe that consuming Gods body and blood will give them everlasting life with God in heaven, Dracula is remaining undead, or nosferatu, by consuming the blood of the living to survive and to build his strength. By this, Dracula is relying on humans to restore his life after death and not concentrating on God as the source of life. It is said that you must let God into your heart, Dracula may not enter someones home unless they let him in. God is referred to in the Bible as being the light, which symbolizes happiness or life. Draculas powers are limited dur ing the light and his powers are stronger in the night, during darkness, which symbolizes evil. Dracula moves to an old abandoned Church not used anymore which can show that God is no longer present which would accomplish Draculas purpose of spreading evil. Dracula is also portrayed as the Anti-Christ by having similarities with Jesus but in evil ways. As Dracula feeds on the blood of the living he creates followers as Jesus had disciples. Throughout the book several times, normally while Reinfield (one of his followers or disciples) is speaking, when Dracula is referred to the pronoun is capitalized, as Christians would do when referring to God. Reinfield views Dracula as god-like and all-powerful, he also refers to him as his master. Throughout the novel, Bram Stoker uses many biblical allusions to show the god-like manner of Dracula, such as the blood is the life said by Reinfield and when Renfield quotes Enoch. Renfield wants to walk by Draculas side as Enoch walked by Gods side . When the count is defeated in the end, he becomes dust. This is important because turning into dust represents Christian freedom in death and frees him from his evil ways. Bram Stokers Dracula emphasizes role of Christianity against Draculas Anti-Christian presence. Dracula himself is a demonic figure, both in appearance and in behavior, and could be considered the Anti-Christ. In many ways Dracula is represented as the epitome of evil. In the end, he is defeated by holiness. Oedipus The King Sometimes humans try to avoid their inevitable destiny for their lives; there are moments that we may think of ourselves as invincible and smarter than what is already decided. There may also be a point when making a decision leads to a great error in judgment. In Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, both of these problems are noticed in the character, Oedipus. They are known as tragic flaws. A tragedy must have the character to have a flaw in his hamartia. Oedipus' single flaw that is pointed out is hubris, excessive pride. A single flaw can allow a man to be defeated. Oedipus the King is a tragedy. A tragedy is a play that portrays a conflict between human beings and some superior, overwhelming force. It ends sorrowfully and disastrously, and the outcome seems inevitable. In a tragedy, the hero is upper class that is capable of suffering. He is neither good nor bad. Due to the flaws in his actions and behaviors, he will have everything and lose it all. He is the hero and king of Thebes, but because of his fate, he ends up being blind in exile. Oedipus runs from his own homeland including his mother and father. He is trying to escape his fate. The gods above told him that he would, in his future, kill his father and marry his mother. By moving somewhere else, he believes his parents will be safe from him. Someone told him that Polybus and Merope were not his real parents so he asked them, but they lied telling him they were. Oedipus still has doubts so he goes to Delphi where he is told the truth, but not the identity of his real parents. He flees Corinth where his parents are in order to avoid the prophecy. Oedipus leaves Corinth and heads in the opposite direction towards Thebes. On his journey, a chariot tries to run him of the road. He became very angry, which causes him to become violent so he kills Laius and the men who are with him. One man escaped the wrath of Oedipus and fled back to Thebes. Although he does not know Laius was his father, he is one step closer to fulfilling the prophecy. Oedipus is on the path close to the town of Thebes where this is a Sphinx who kills people who cannot answer her riddle. Oedipus succeeds in solving the riddle, causing the Sphinx to destroy herself. He is received with enthusiasm by the Thebans that just lost their king. The Thebans make him king and he marries Jocasta who was married to the late Laius. He is ignorant in knowing that not only has he killed his father, but also now, he has married his mother. Oedipus sinks low because of his tragic flaws, his actions, and his inability to dance around one's fate. There is a plague in the land, so Oedipus wants it to go away, so he sends Creon to Delphi to find out what to do. Creon is Jocasta's sister and his brother-in-law. Apollo shot an arrow, which caused the plague because Laius' death went unsolved. Apollo wants the killer(s) paid back for the murder. Oedipus wants to find the murderer, so he says that whoever killed Laius will be exiled or killed. Someone tells Oedipus to send for blind Tiresias who knows everything. Tiresias does not want to tell Oedipus the truth, but Oedipus keeps harassing Tiresias even threatens him with torture. Finally, he tells Oedipus the truth but Oedipus does not want to believe the truth. Oedipus shows an error in judgment when he disregards Tiresias' warning. He is too hardheaded to listen to what Tiresias has to say to him. In doing this, he creates his own downfall. He disregards all the information given to him because he thinks that he can control his destiny. A servant announces to the king and his people that Jocasta was dead. She hung herself in her bedroom when she figured out that her husband was really her son. Her four children were by her first born who she thought was dead. Oedipus sees his mother/wife's body he pulls to pins out of her dress and gouges his eyes out with them. He does this several times, causing blood to drip down his face and on his beard.
